It is an old, rudimentary and authentic breed. His story emerges in the mist of time somewhere in the sixteenth century, in the central regions of Italy (Comacchio and Ravenna). In the marshes here, these dogs were used to bring small hunt water from the water ponds. Sharp smell and agility helped them to do that.
Towards the eighteenth century, marshes began to be drained to make way for arable land. So our dog was left without the activity that he consecrated and was reprofiled by the breeders who inoculated him another talent: the truffle discovery.
Extremely developed smell allowed him to feel the precious mushrooms that hide deep in the soil. As a result, the race has grown even more in the eyes of the passionate at that time. Popular in Italy, the dog has begun to be exported to neighboring countries, across Europe and even across the ocean.
However, the breeders did nothing to write a standard and officially record the breed. Only in 1995, at the initiative of the FCI (International Chinological Federation), Lagotto Romagnolo was officially recognized as a pure breed.
By 1900, the breeders began to make a counter-selection of the breed trying to build two lines: one hunting and one truffle. Why this ?! Lagotto was easily trained to look for the mushrooms, but in the woods, the hunter instinct made it easy to distract the others, the dog being harder to control.
So the inhibition of the hunter instinct in favor of the seeker has been attempted. But it did not succeed; it is very difficult to remove an instict that accompanied the dog for 400 years and replace it with a freshly assigned one (truffles).
It is also known as the Italian water dog.
Lagotto Romagnolo’s Food
As with other breeds we start with what is not allowed. Maybe the biggest poison is chocolate. And not because they are not more toxic foods and the simple fact that they come into contact most often. Many dog owners offer sweets, ice cream, and other dog-like foods, not knowing they are doing bad.
If you have a dog whose future you are interested in, it is important to know how to care for him. This, besides food, includes movement, care, training, etc. Besides chocolate and sweets, the dog has other needs than man. The diet of many dogs, and here I refer to a correct diet, we can not fix it in the house.
A correct diet is based on race, dog age, activity level, daily average effort, etc. It is recommended to give him cook food as well as dry food, canned or otherwise in the store as long as it contains the necessary nutritional and dog food.
Lagotto Romagnolo’s Aspect
Lagotto Romagnolo is a medium-sized, well proportioned, muscular dog with a body that can be enclosed in a square. The head is relatively large and is supported by a thick and strong neck.
The eyes are round and large, the color palette is generous: different shades of brown and even dark orange, depending on the color of the coat. Scissor bite. The triangular ears have rounded edges and are worn on the head.
Coat is a peculiarity of the breed. Like the Poodle, Lagotto does not sheds, being considered a hypoallergenic dog. The fur is dense, soft and crinkled.
The hair often protects it from the potential stings of the thorns in the bushes that they roam in search of truffles. Many color variants are accepted, from full white to rusty, brown, rust and white, etc.
Male: Height (43-49 cm); weight (13-16kg)
Females: Height (36-41 cm); weight (11-14 kg).
Lagotto Romagnolo’s Behavior
Undoubtedly, it’s a working dog, who gives his best to thank the master. It is also a friendly and loyal, becoming a true family dog.
It’s relatively easy to train. It’s a smart dog that needs to be busy all the time. If it is not sufficiently stimulated, it gets bored and can get destructive. Understands with other animals if socialized by little.
It has developed senses, even the one of the property, so it will signal when someone is crossing the territory, thus becoming a good guard dog. They are good swimmers and most love water.
They like to dig and they can destroy your garden. Give your dog a special place to dig and you will get rid of problems. Even if you do not use your Lagotto to search for truffles, you do not deny them “search-discovery objects” games. They like to be stimulated in this way.
Lagotto needs a lot of exercises, having a natural instinct to look for things. He likes to walk around the master, and needs a walk every day. He also likes to swim like a water dog.
Lagotto Romagnolo’s Training
Whether they are puppies, young or adult, all dogs belonging to the breed must be trained. Sessions should be only 5-10 minutes due to short duration of attention. Training should take place in a free area without distractions.
It is preferable to perform a modern training using the reward system, a technique used by trainers for most races. The food used as a reward should be made up of small and extremely tasty pieces that the animal can enjoy every time it receives a piece of food.
For effective training the dog should receive a piece every time he gives a response or performs a correct movement, accompanied obviously by the words of praise.
Patience is essential in the proper training of the dog. If you are nervous, frustrated, etc., it is advisable not to start training. Dogs are sensitive to emotions and may misunderstand your commands.
Punishing or hitting the dog is not only not recommended, but the dog can catch the fear of you, and this makes training difficult or in some cases impossible. Use a friendly voice.
Do not scream. Always use simple and clear commands, firmly spoken. Do not change the orders and give them an anomaly because the animal will be in a state of confusion and will not know what to do.
Lagotto Romagnolo’s Features
This dog does not sheds, but that does not mean he does not need care. Periodically, the fur must be brushed, otherwise they may be broken.
Twice a year hair is trimmed. Curly hair tends to accumulate dirt more easily, and bathing is needed from time to time. The hair in the ears takes care of periodically to prevent infections.
Thanks to the waist, Lagotto can be an excellent dog in an apartment, but also in a yard because it is not very picky. It feels good in the apartment if it is walked daily 3-4 times (short walks) or 1-2 long walks.
Lagotto Romagnolo’s Diseases
The old breed, Lagotto Romagnolo is a healthy, sturdy dog that lives up to 16 years old. Hip dysplasia and epilepsy occur more often in this race.
